The 2017 version of the Waterfront Triathlon will be held in downtown Chattanooga on Sunday, June 25 with the first race beginning at 6:45 a.m. and the second one at 7:30.

A sprint event, which includes a quarter-mile swim, a 10.5-mile bike ride and a 5K run, kicks things off while the longer and more popular intermediate race is set for 7:30 and includes a 1.5K swim, a 42K bike ride and a 10K run.

The swim starts at the rowing barge on the Tennessee River next to Scrappy Moore Field and exits at Ross’s landing.

The bike course, which in years past has gone out I-124 toward Soddy Daisy, has been changed because of all the road construction and will include a double-loop course out Amnicola Highway near Chattanooga State and back.

The run course has been changed as well and will remain on the Chattanooga Riverwalk, but will go south from Spring Hill Suites to a turnaround near the old Wheeland Foundry before finishing on Riverfront Parkway at Ross’s Landing.

The event, which has been part of a Chattanooga tradition since the early 80s, is sponsored and directed by members of the Chattanooga Track Club and Team Magic. This year's course is much flatter and faster than previous years.

Chris Douglas is the defending overall winner in the intermediate race with a time of 2:01:06 while Sara Gibson was last year’s overall female winner after taking 31st place overall with a time of 2:22:09.

Matthew Rigsby and Ashley Powell are defending champs in the sprint race with times of 52:25 and 57:04, respectively.

Registration is still open for both races and can be activated at
