Scenic City Half Marathon
Posted: Tuesday, February 21, 2012

The annual Scenic City Half-Marathon and 5K will be held in downtown Chattanooga on Saturday, February 25.

The event, which includes a 13.1-mile footrace and a 3.1-mile race, starts and finishes at Finley Stadium.  The Half-Marathon has been designated as the Tennessee State Championship by the Road Runners Club of America.

The longer race begins at 8 a.m. while the 5K is slated to begin at 8:15.  There is no race-day registration.

The Chattanooga Track Club is putting on the event, which benefits several charitable organizations, including Area 4 Special Olympics, Chattanooga Community Kitchen, Chattanooga Room in the Inn, Children’s Advocacy, Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter, McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center and the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults.

The route for the Half-Marathon begins on Carter Street and heads down 20th Street to Riverfront Parkway, passing under the Market and Walnut Street bridges before heading out Amnicola Highway.  A left turn on River Terminal Road (where the Hamilton County Election Commission is located) leads to the Riverwalk where the runners return back to town.

After passing through the Bluffview Art District, the course goes over the Walnut Street bridge before turning onto Frazier and heading to the Veterans Bridge.  After crossing  the Tennessee River once again, the course returns to Riverfront Parkway where it heads to the finish near Finley Stadium.

John Sillery and Kimberly Humphries, both from Chattanooga, are the defending champions in the half-marathon with times of 1:16:36 and 1:29:25, respectively.

Knoxville’s Jason Altman was the 5K winner last year in 17:03 while Chattanooga’s Leah Golden was the female winner in 24:03.

The awards will be presented for the 5K at 9:30 and at 11 a.m. for the half-marathon.  All will be at the First Tennessee pavilion on Carter Street.

Packet pickup for the contestants will be at the Crystal Room of the Chattanooga Choo Choo on Friday from 4-8 p.m.

Saturday’s weather forecast calls for clear skies and a low temperature in the mid 30s and a high in the mid 50s.
