Chattanooga “Get Your Rear in Gear” 5K Promotes Colon Cancer Awareness

Second Annual 5K Run/Fun Walk set for Saturday, March 24, 2011 at Coolidge Park

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Chattanooga, Tenn. (Friday, Jan. 12, 2012) – The second annual Get Your Rear in Gear Chattanooga 5K Run/Walk will take place Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Coolidge Park in Chattanooga. Runners, walkers and colon cancer survivors will join forces to raise awareness for the importance of early colon cancer screening, and to provide support for those affected by the nation’s number two cancer killer. Funds raised will support the newly founded Greater Chattanooga Colon Cancer Foundation, in their efforts to increase awareness of colorectal cancer, improve access to screenings and offer support to those touched by the disease in the greater Chattanooga region.

Last year’s race drew more than 900 runners and walkers, raising more than $24,000 in support of colon cancer awareness and education. Shauna Lorenzo-Rivero., M.D., a colorectal surgeon for University Surgical Associates, is co-chair of the Get Your Rear in Gear Chattanooga race committee.

“The Get Your Rear in Gear Chattanooga 5K Race and Fun Walk reminds us all that through fitness and fellowship, colon cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable,” said Dr. Lorenzo. “We were extremely thrilled with last year’s turnout, and are hoping to draw 1,500 participants this year. It is our belief this race and fun walk will generate much-needed awareness and funds we can use to better educate the region on issues regarding colon and rectal cancer.”
