CHATTANOOGA TRACK CLUB MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON TRAINING

The Chattanooga Track Club announces the Club’s Marathon and Half Marathon Training Program for new and experienced runners interested in doing the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon and Half Marathon and other fall races.  See below the initial schedule for the training program runs, initial Junior Miracle Marathon run, information sessions, and a new Training Program for beginner runners who want to run a marathon or half marathon. 

Saturday, July 23rd training run starting at downtown Sports Barn at 7AM (arrive by 6:45AM) All levels welcomed.

Wednesday, July 27th training run starting at downtown Sports Barn at 6:15PM (arrive by 6PM).  All levels welcomed.

Thursday, July 28th Information Session at Erlanger Hospital.  Drop in anytime from 6PM to 8PM and talk to Chattanooga Track Club members who will answer your questions: 

Can I run a marathon or half marathon?  What’s involved?  How much time will it take?  Who will help me train? 

For answers to these and other questions come to the session to be held in Conference Room 140 at the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger Massoud Building.

Saturday, July 30th - Official Training Program and Junior Miracle Marathon Kickoff.  A training run will take place at 7AM (arrive by 6:45AM) starting from the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitors Center lower parking lot.  A Kickoff Event will take place following the run at the nearby 6th Cavalry Museum, Barnhart Circle in Fort Oglethorpe GA, the traditional start/finish of the marathon and half marathon.  The Kickoff will start at 11AM with food and beverages for runners following their earlier runs.  In addition, 1st through 6th grade students will run their initial mile at 11:30AM as part of the Junior Miracle Marathon program presented in partnership with Children’s Hospital at Erlanger.

NEW Training Program for Beginner Runners  The CTC is excited to announce a personal training program for persons interested in running a Marathon or Half Marathon.  The Training Program is free and open to all interested runners.  Bonnie Wassin, an accomplished Track Club marathoner, will lead this program.  Bonnie has completed over 50 marathons, however, the program will be geared to beginners.  Bonnie and other track club members will run with the beginner runners every Wednesday and Saturday and will also be pacers for these beginners in the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon and Half Marathon on Nov. 12th. 

The program will utilize the very popular Jeff Galloway run-walk-run interval training method.  Bonnie Wassin was a student at one of Jeff Galloway’s training sessions a few years ago when this method was introduced and has used it very successfully ever since. The beginner Marathontraining group will train for a 5 hour 30 minute marathon which is a very comfortable 12 minute 30 second per mile pace.  The Half Marathon training group will train at the same pace.   The beginner runners will run the following distances for the first couple of training runs:

July 23rd:  Beginner Marathoners – 5 miles; Beginner Half Marathoners – 2 Miles
July 27th:  Beginner Marathoners – 5 miles; Beginner Half Marathoners – 2 Miles
Saturday, July 30th: Beginner Marathoners – 10 miles; Beginner Half Marathoners – 2 Miles

Beginner runners interested in participating should attend one of the above runs, the information session, or contact the Track Club at marathon@chattanoogatrackclub.org.  Beginner runners for the marathon should be capable of running a 10 mile long run and running 4 days a week to participate in the program while half marathon beginner runners should be comfortable running a 2 mile long run and running 3 days a week.
