**MARATHON UPDATE**

The following are the locations of the mile markers for the marathon, courtesy of David Presley:

Location of mile markers for the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon, 2005 version.

All directions (past, before, left, right) are from the perspective of the runner, at that point on the course.

For most of the markers below, a rough location is first given just to get the race worker in the general area, followed by a more specific location. All of these locations are marked with two washers on the right-hand side of the road (again, from the perspective of the runner). The only exception is the 13-mile mark, where the markers are on the left-hand side of the road. The washers are generally located between 6 and 12 inches from the edge of the pavement.

For several roads, the runners use the road going in both directions. Make sure that mile signs posted on these roads are turned in the correct direction. Most notably, the runners encounter miles 18, 8, 19 and 9 as they head southward, toward the dogleg turnaround on Mag Williams. They counter miles 20, 10, 21, 11 and 22 as they head northward, away from the dogleg turnaround.

Start:  On Oakwood Street, roughly 320 feet south of Myers Street. Exactly even with the utility pole that sits immediately (about 3 feet) north of the northernmost entrance to the main parking lot at Oakwood Baptist Church. Also located about 2 feet south of the church's mailbox, which is located on the other (west) side of the street. See the course map for a diagram of this area.

1 mile: On Wilder Road, roughly 1/4 mile after crossing the four-lane Highway 27. Located 860 feet before / south of the southernmost of three stone block Illinois monuments that are located on the left / west side of the road.

2 mile: On Lytle Road. The runners cross the railroad tracks right at Wilder Tower to get onto the west side of the tracks. They soon cross back to the east / right side. This mark is located just after the runners cross the tracks a third time, to get back onto the west / left side of the tracks. The mark is 216 feet after the tracks.

3 mile: On Chickamauga-Vittatoe Road, after crossing the railroad tracks for a fourth time, back into the Battlefield. Roughly 1/10 mile after passing Vittatoe Road (dirt) on your left. Mark is 79 feet before the C.S.A. York's GA Battery sign up on the small hill to your right (next to single cannon).

4 mile:  Roughly 2/10 mile after the course passes the Rec Field, and turns northward on Glenn-Kelly. Mark is  248 feet past the 11th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery sign, which is located about 50 feet off the left side of the road (next to cannons).

5 mile: On Glenn-Kelly, roughly 100 yards before intersection with Vittatoe. Mark is 237 feet past the wooden South Carolina Monument sign that is located 30 feet off the left side of the road.

6 mile: On Alexander-Bridge Road, roughly 0.15 mile after crossing Lafayette Road. Mark is 73 feet before the first of 9 stone Georgia monuments located in a row on the left.

7 mile: On Alexander-Bridge Road, roughly 125 yards before intersection with Brotherton. Exactly 34 feet past the Liddell's Brigade sign that sits 20 feet off the left edge of the road.

8 mile: On Alexander-Bridge Road, roughly 1/10 mile after intersection with Jay's Mill. Exactly 328 feet past the southern end of the wood guardrail on the right.

9 mile: 9 feet after turning from Alexander-Bridge Road onto Mag Williams (as measured from the change in pavement texture).

Dogleg turnaround: Roughly 1/2 mile after turning onto Mag Williams road, after one right-hand 90 degree bend, and one left-hand 90 degree bend. Just over the short but steep hill. Exactly 374 feet past / south of the brick mailbox to 400 Mag Williams Road. Also marked with orange paint, a line plus a "T".

10 mile: Just before Mag Williams ends at Alexander-Bridge road, exactly 98 feet before the Stop sign at that intersection.

11 mile: On Alexander-Bridge Road, roughly midway between the intersection with Viniard-Alexander and the intersection with Jay's Mill Road. Exactly 538 feet before the wooden guardrail begins on the left side of the road.

12 mile: Just after turning left from Alexander-Bridge Road onto Brotherton. Exactly 173 feet past the Stop sign that sits at the southwest corner of this intersection.

13 mile: Right as the course turns left off Lafayette Road onto Dyer Road. The mark is 4 feet before the stop sign on the left.

Half-Marathon: Roughly 1/10 mile after turning onto Dyer Road. Exactly 39 feet after the Negley's Division Thomas' Corps sign that sits 15 feet off the left side of road (beside the picket fence).

14 mile: Roughly 2/10 mile after turning right onto Chickamauga-Vittatoe. 81 feet before the last tree on the right before opening up into the large field.

15 mile: On Glenn-Kelly, roughly 1/10 mile after turning left from Dyer. 3 feet past the cannonball pyramid monument on the right, labeled Headquarters for Longstreet's Corps.

16 mile: On Glenn-Kelly, roughly 1/4 mile before the intersection with Lafayette Road. 158 feet past a small stone marker for Eleventh Michigan Infantry, which is located 90 feet (back in the trees) off right side of road.

17 mile: About 3/4 mile up Alexander-Bridge Road from Lafayette Road. 634 feet past the Semples Alabama Battery sign, which is about 50 feet off the right / west side of the road (with cannons).

18 mile: On Alexander-Bridge Road, roughly midway between intersections with Brotherton and Jay's Mill Road. 498 feet past / south of the Jackson's Brigade sign that sits 20 feet off the left / east side of the road.

19 mile: On Alexander Bridge Road, roughly 150 feet before / north of the bridge itself. Mark is 3 feet before the southern end of the two-car pull-off on the right.

20 mile: Just *after* making the dogleg turnaround on Mag Williams Road. Mark is 236 feet before / south of the brick mailbox to 400 Mag Williams Road.

21 mile: On Alexander Bridge Road, roughly 130 yards past / north of the bridge itself. Mark is 6 inches past the Speed Limit 25 sign on the right.

22 mile: On Alexander-Bridge Road, roughly midway between intersections with Brotherton and Jay's Mill road. Mark is 226 feet before / south of the Jackson's Brigade sign that sits 20 feet off the right / east side of the road.

23 mile: On Brotherton Road, roughly 6/10 mile after turning onto it from Alexander-Bridge Road. Mark is 132 feet before / east of the stone block Indiana Thirty-First Regiment monument on right (15 feet from road).

24 mile: On Glenn-Kelly, roughly 2/10 mile after turning left from Dyer. Mark is 21 feet past the Negley's Division Thomas' Corp sign on the left / east. Note that this is not the same sign as for the Half-Marathon mark.

25 mile: On Wilder Road, just before the road opens up into the long straight stretch. Mark is 87 feet before / north of the first / northernmost of three stone block Illinois monuments on the right / west side of the road.

26 mile: On Myers Street, 37 feet past / west of the mailbox (on right) for 113 Myers Street.

Finish: Same as start.
