Scenic City Half Marathon to Benefit Eight Charities

Chattanooga, TN– This year’s edition of the Scenic City Half Marathon, 5k and Charity Challenge will feature the participation of eight local charities. The event is scheduled for Saturday February 28, 2009.

Charity Challenge

In an effort to give back to the community, the Scenic City Half Marathon and 5k features a special Charity Challenge. As part of the Charity Challenge, a portion of each participant's entry fee will be donated to a charity of the participant's selection. Participants also have the opportunity to raise additional funds for the charity, if they choose, through a special online fund raising system.

This year’s Charity Challenge includes two new charities: Area 4 Special Olympics and Partnership for Families, Children and Adults. Charities who participated last year and have returned for 2009 include: McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center, Bethlehem Center, Chattanooga Room in the Inn, Children’s Advocacy Center, Children’s Home / Chambliss Shelter and Tennessee Aquarium.

In 2008, the Charity Challenge raised over $13,000 for the participating charities. This year’s Charity Challenge will continue to raise funds through entry fees and online donations thorough February 25th.

Half Marathon & 5k

Both the half marathon and 5k start and finish at Finely Stadium, at the corner of Main Street and Carter Street, in downtown Chattanooga. The half marathon begins at 8:00 am and the 5k beings at 8:30 am.

The half marathon features a 13.1 mile course run alongside of the Tennessee River. Participants will leave the Finely Stadium area via Riverside Drive, heading toward Ross’s Landing. After passing the Tennessee Aquarium runners will proceed east on Amnicola Highway. After turning around, participants will head back to downtown Chattanooga via the Riverwalk. Runners will then cross over the Tennessee River via the Walnut St Bridge, run through North Shore, and then head across the Veterans Bridge. Participants will then return to Finely Stadium via Riverside Drive.

Registration fees for the 2009 Scenic City Half Marathon, 5k and Charity Challenge increase on Sunday February 1, 2009. Participants you want to receive the early online registration rate of $40 for the half marathon and $20 for the 5k need to register by January 31st.
