Record Numbers at BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon

Chattanooga, TN – Over 1,100 athletes participated in Sunday’s 3rd Annual BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon. This marks a record for the event.

The triathlon included a 1.5k swim down the Tennessee River, a 40k bike along Highway 27, and a 10k run along the Riverwalk. The event was centered around Ross’s Landing.

“The 2007 BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon was a phenomenally successful event,” said Bill Brock, Race Director. “Course modifications made possible through the assistance of the City of Chattanooga, TDOT, Red Bank and Hamilton County gave participants a race experience that is unique regionally and nationally.  Feedback from our racers was terrific and it is especially great that over 1,100 of those participants came from over 29 states and two countries,” said Brock.

Craig Evans of Spring Hill TN, won the event with an overall time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, 17 seconds. Margaret Finely, of Germantown, TN, was the female champion with an overall time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, 42 seconds.

The event, which brings competitors from around the country, is expected to generate over $900,000 for the local economy.

As a 2007 USAT USA Triathlon Regional Championship, the BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon served as a qualifying event for both the 2008 Short Course Triathlon World Championship and the 2008 USAT National Age Group Championship.

Participants who finished first in their age group division automatically qualified for the 2008 Short Course Triathlon World Championship. The following athletes qualified for the world championships: Cliff Adlerz, Robert Alt, Susan Bradley-Cox, Jan Brucato, Barbara Chandler, John Disterdick, Warren Everett, Marty Gaal, Sarah Gardiner, Johanna Gartman, Richard Klepacz, Barry Knight, Larry Krutka, Matt Long, Juliet Lovett, Kelsey Markham, Wendi Parker-Dial, David Phillips, Kristen Sass, Ann Sims, Joseph Welsh, Chase Williamson, Zach Winchester, Anne Wright, and Melinda Yelton,

The top five or top 33% of finishers, which ever is greater, in each age group division qualified for the 2008 USAT National Age Group Championship

The race was made possible through the generosity and hard work of over 300 volunteers.

The BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon is co-produced by the Chattanooga Track Club (CTC) and Team Magic.

The year marks the 25th time the Chattanooga Track Club has hosted a triathlon. CTC presented their first triathlon, the Riverbend Triathlon, in 1982. In 1991 the Riverbend Triathlon was replaced by the Chattanooga Dam Triathlon. The Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon replaced the Chattanooga Dam Triathlon in 2005.
